2000 Race RecapThe 2000 racing finals proved extremely close with the top three positions separated by only 109 total points! Mar G Too - Skippered by Mimi Carlson - was the champ with 4619 points! Mimi was followed by Karmel, with the Skipper duties shared between Ki and Byron Hoffman, at 4584 points, and, Sirocco came in third with 4510 points. Bob Crabb was at the helm of Sirocco for all races. Congratulations to the Summer Series trophy winners! Here are the race results: Fourth of July (Sailed Saturday 7/2/00)Although the skies were overcast, conditions were excellent with East/Northeast winds between 12-15MPH and a ten boat fleet. Two races were held on a four-legged windward - leeward trek starting in front of Carlsons' at Hillaway and racing to Loufex's point and back. With Ki at the helm, Karmel captured the day with two firsts. Mar G Too, skippered by Mimi and crewed by son Colby, came in second overall with two third place finishes. Bob Crabb and Sirocco earned third place for the day with two fourths. Except for equipment problems in Race 1, My Lady - skippered by Kerry Running - was in the hunt for a top three finish for the day. Kerry's a contender for 2001! Memorial Cup (Sailed 7/23/00)Shifting winds (S/SW 8-10MPH) on a sunny day challenged the ten boat fleet during the two races this day. Race 1 was a port trek from Jim Brandt's Point to the Island - Hillaway - Brandt's. Race 2 was a reversal of Race 1 on a starboard trek from Brandt's to Hillaway, the island, and back to Brandt's. Ki Hoffman, with Byron and Luke crewing, sailed Karmel to a first and a fourth for a first overall for the day. Nice race! With a third in Race 1 and a second in Race 2, Bob Crabb and crew, Rob Higgins, followed the Hoffmans for the cup in Sirocco. Mimi Carlson and Colby in Mar G Too made up for a sixth place in Race 1 with first place in Race 2 to snatch third overall and 1801 points. It was nice to see Tom Garbisch with daughter Greta racing Mar G. We're looking for this combo to be back this season. Moxness Cup (Sailed 8/5)Light winds (S/SW 5-8MPH) on a day of threatening weather forced a one-race Moxness Race competition. The course was marks-to-starboard starting at Siqvelands', windward to Whitefish Point, reaching to Gainy's and finishing back at Siqvelands'. Mimi and Colby Carlson sailed a brilliant race, especially down the leeward leg, to finish first in Mar G Too. Second place went to the Siqveland brothers in Chloe followed by Bob Crabb and crew in Sirocco. Thanks, once again, to the Garbisch clan for their hospitality extended to the members and friends of the club at the beach gathering for a post-race awards ceremony. August 19 Fun RaceA fourth race on August 19th drew a fleet of eight boats. Heavy southern winds 16 - 22MPH and gusting higher made an exciting two-race event with a starboard triangle: Siqvelands' - Crabbs' - Gainey's - Siqvelands' course. Four boats - skippered respectively by Pete Roberts, Grant Moos, Andy Nelson, and Maggie Moos - sailed their first and only race of the summer. We'll be looking for their boats at the front end of the 2001 season! Homer and Eric Olson, with Mimi Carlson as crew, also sailed their new boat Dewey Canyon, acquired from TR Brandt. Ki Hoffman led the fleet with two firsts followed by Pete Roberts' two second place finishes and Grant Moos' two thirds. It was quite a day. -Tom Siqveland 2000 Season Standings
