2001 Race RecapCongratulations to the Hoffmans for an impressive season of sailing in 2001. Between Ki, Byron and their crews, Karmel captured overall first place with a total of 5718 points across the best three of four qualifying races. Tom Brandt and crew, in his new boat, came in second for the year with 5461 points and Bob Crabb (with cousin Mimi Carlson helping at the helm of Sirocco on occasion) captured third place only three points behind Tom with 5458 points. Nice job, winners! Fourth of July - July 7, 2001Light winds on this day made for a difficult sail. Of the seven boats that sailed, only five finished the first and only race on a shortened course. Still Sirocco, with Bob Crabb at the Skipper's post and Mimi Carlson crewing, was able to outlast Byron and Rose Hoffman in Karmel for the win. Chris Brandt, with daughter Janie, took third. Memorial Cup - July 21, 2001ESE winds from 2-5 mph made for a good race. Ten boats raced the three legs from Siqvelands' - Hillaway - Gainy's Point - Siqvelands' in race one. The course was windward/leeward for race two from Siqvelands' - Gainy's - Siqvelands'. Siroco (Bob Crabb switching at helm with Mimi), and Karmel (Ki and Byron) tied for first place with a first and a third each in the two races. Tom Brandt and crew Tom Jr. took second with two seconds for the day. Moxness Cup - August 4, 2001South winds of 8-12 mph with clear skies made for an exciting day of sailing. A fleet of fourteen boats competed in a four-legged race, with two windward legs in the first race, and three legs in the second. Karmel, with Ki skippering, had an excellent sail taking first in both races. Pete Roberts came in second this day with a third and a second respectively in the two races and Tom Brandt (with son Tom and nephew Ben) earning third place for the day. This race was one for the books as the fleet was full, the weather was great, and the winds were ideal! August Summer Series - August 18, 2001ESE winds of 10-14 mph made for a fast race on a windward/leeward course from Carlson's to Loufex and back. A fleet of five boats started the day but only four finished. Yours truly capsized making a small fleet even smaller. For the second time this season, Sirocco and Karmel tied for first for the day with each boat taking a first and a third in the two races. Tom Brandt finished second. Thanks to everyone for a great season! - Tom Siqveland 2001 Season Standings
